Amur Leopards : The Basics

This amazing type of cat is one of the most endangered of all cats, big or small. Their status is critically endangered The Amur Leopard is mainly hunted by poachers and their fur is usually sold on the black market and is valued highly. The average lifespan of Amur Leopards in the wild is about 10 to 15 years but in captivity, and/or the right conditions, can live up to 20 years. Amur Leopards eat roe deer, sika deer, badgers and hares. Unlike Tigers, Amur Leopards will also go for smaller prey, like squirrels.

The scientific name of Amur Leopards is theĀ Panthera pardus orientalis, they are about 6 to 7 feet in length. Male Amur Leopards generally weigh 32-48 kg, but in extreme cases can weigh up to 75 kg. Females are smaller than the males and weigh about 25-43 kg.

Amur Leopards look like typical leopards, as they have spots on there body. The color on a leopards depends on their surrounding environment, and the Amur Leopard has a paler coat than other leopards because it lives in a place that is located in higher latitude. (Russia and China)
